2018 Best of the Super Juniors: Block A scenarios

June 1, 2018
By: Lou Pickney

The last 2018 BOTSJ split-block show happens tonight in Gunma with Block B. They are one show behind Block A, where the tiebreaker scenarios are set for who will win the block and advance to the Final.

It will be either Ishimori or Ospreay advancing from Block A unless both wrestlers lose their respective matches on June 3 at Korakuen Hall. Every Block A match on that show matters though, with both BUSHI and Tiger Mask (IV) still mathematically in the running to force a five-or-six way tie at the top with 8 points, though neither BUSHI nor Tiger Mask can win the block.

Ishimori has the head-to-head tiebreaker over Ospreay. Flip Gordon is like an NFL team that needs several outcomes to all hit in Week 17 to land the last playoff wild card spot. Flip needs this scenario: Flip over Ospreay, YOH over Ishimori, Tiger Mask over ACH, and either a Kanemaru win over BUSHI or a draw in that match. That's the only way.

No word yet on the match order for Korakuen on 6/3, since that will also involve Block B, but here are the matches and the respective points for each of the eight participants.

Taiji Ishimori (8) vs. YOH (6)
Will Ospreay (8) vs. Flip Gordon (6)
BUSHI (6) vs. Yoshinobu Kanemaru (4)
Tiger Mask (6) vs. ACH (4)

You would think Ospreay and Ishimori would both win, since that allows Ospreay to not advance without having to do another job. But you never know with Gedo's booking.

Block A scenarios

Ishimori advances with a win or a draw coupled with an Ospreay draw/loss.
Ospreay advances with a win and an Ishimori draw/loss, or a draw and an Ishimori loss.

If Ishimori and Ospreay both lose...

4-way tie: YOH
5-way tie including BUSHI: YOH
5-way tie including Tiger Mask: Flip
6-way tie: YOH

4-way tie

YOH: W Flip, *W* Ishimori, L Ospreay (2-1)
Flip: W Ishimori, *W* Ospreay, L YOH (2-1)

YOH advances on the head-to-head with Flip.

BUSHI: W Flip, L Ishimori, L Tiger, W Ospreay, L YOH (2-3)
Tiger: W BUSHI, L Flip, L Ishimori, L Ospreay, W YOH (2-3)

Ishimori, YOH and Flip all tie among the group at 3-2; YOH advances with best head-to-head among the three.
